Age: 35
From When?: His fight with Lord Ruler near the end of the first book.
Inmate/Warden:
- Warden. Kelsier has a way of teaching even the most paranoid how to trust him and by extension, others. He can inspire people and help them discover who they are. In canon, he does this with Vin, she was instinctively distrustful of him and thought he only wanted to use her. In the end, he became like a father to her.
He would likely do the same for any inmate. Unless, for some reason he thinks they're beyond redemption, this is rare but possible. Prior to his arrival he went down his own path of redemption in the book and those he once thought it best to just kill those he thought irredeemable but he learned to see the potential in them. Even those he had spent his entire life hating.
Kelsier does want to help others. Especially if its in helping others learn from his own mistakes or them learning from their own.
Item: pocket watch
Abilities/Powers:
- Kelsier is what's called a Mistborn, an Allomancer who can use all the known metals. Most Allomancers can only burn one metal. Allomancers are section of the population that are granted certain powers by ingesting and "burning" certain metals. There are many metals but Kelsier is only aware of eleven. Each metal grants a certain type of power. Below are listed the metals Kelsier has used and is aware of.
External metals effect the world around the user. Internal metals effect the user directly.
Physical Metals
STEEL (external) Allows the user to "Push" metals away from them. The laws of physics still apply however, one can only push metals that weigh less then themselves otherwise they will be pushed away from the metal. An additional ablity that comes with both Steel and Iron is the ability to sense nearby metals. This manifests as faint blue lines in their vision that point toward sources of metal. It has a limited range.
An additional limitation is most Mistborns(Kelsier included) can't "Push" metal within the body or piercing the body, earrings for example.
IRON (external) Allows the user to "Pull" metals toward them. However, like steel Pushing the laws of physics still apply. If one pulls on a metal that weighs more than they do they will be pulled toward it. If they pull on metal that weighs less, such as a coin, it will be pulled toward them.
Like with Steel, most Mistborns(Kelsier included) can't "Pull" on metals inside the body or piercing the body.
TIN (internal) Enhances senses, all of them. While burning tin one can become easily blinded by sources of light or sound. Pain and other discomforts also become harder to ignore.
PEWTER (internal) Enhances the body in terms of strength, speed, agility and healing. However, Pewter burns away quickly it's affects only lasting a short time without a steady source of pewter to ingest.
Mental Metals
BRONZE (internal) Allows the user to sense other people in the area using Allomancy. The user will feel a sort of pulsing sensation that grows stronger as they get closer to the source.
COPPER (internal) Shields against those using Bronze. This effectively hides their use of Allomancy from those burning Bronze. Mistborns in Kelsier's time often keep their Copper on all the time to avoid detection.
ZINC (external) Allows the user to affect the existing emotions of those around them. They can choose to "Riot" certain emotions, inflame them and bring them to the surface. This only works if those emotions are present, if an Allomacer misjudges their target their target will be aware of their attempts to manipulate them. Likewise, using a heavy hand while Rioting can also cause them to be detected.
BRASS (external) Allows the user to affect the existing emotions of those around them. Unlike Zinc, Brass can "sooth" emotions to make the target feel them less. The same rules apply in regards to detection. The target can become aware if the soothing is very abrupt.
With Emotional Allomancy(using Brass and/or Zinc) Kelsier is at a passable skill level. There are others far more skilled at the art than he and can avoid detection easily. Kelsier can avoid detection most of the time but often times his powers are obvious to those who know what to look for.
Other metals
ATIUM (external) enables the user to tell the future by just a few seconds. This manifests in the user's vision as translucent white shadowy outlines of the world around them, showing them where things will be in just a few seconds. This metal is used primarily in fights and battles. A user can block another's use of Atium by burning their own, making their outline explode into a chaotic mess in each others vision. Electrum, a metal that was discovered after Kelsier's death, can also block Atium's use against oneself. I mention it to be thorough even as Kelsier is unaware of it.
GOLD (internal) is a very creepy metal. It allows the user to see what they could have become if they made different choices in life. It manifests in the user's vision as other versions of themselves standing there.
MALATIUM (external) This metal is know to Kelsier as The Eleventh Metal. It enables the user to see the possible other lives another person could have lived. It manifests in the user's vision as a shadow following their target.
There are more metals but as I said, Kelsier is only aware of those I've listed. Unknown metals or metals that are of incorrect composition can make the person who attempts to burn them very sick. If they were weakened enough, burning the wrong metal has the potential to kill them.
Unknown Metals (not known by Kelsier)
ALUMINUM (internal) it will completely burn away all the metals in an Allomancer's stomach when burned, rendering them powerless. This was known of in the time of Kelsier but he did not specifically known of it. Should his powers ever need to be limited or neutralized, it would be the easiest way to do it.
Beyond his Mistborn powers, Kelsier is a skilled thief and leader. While he is also an adept assassin, he doesn't consider himself one. His focus is more on the goal of his current job. He breaks these jobs into parts to make them more manageable. Before he "Snapped" and gained his Mistborn abilities he had already made quite a name for himself as a master thief. He and his team would routinely pull off the most impossible jobs. This was largely do to his leadership in making the impossible seem possible.
Personality:
- Much of who Kelsier is was shaped by the events of his life. He has endured his share of hardship over the years. All of it can be traced back to his birth. He is a half-breed(Noble father and skaa mother) which are forbidden by law. His mother was executed for concealing her origins and children. He developed a hatred of the Nobility early on and it only got compounded as his life went on and he saw more and more injustices caused by the Nobility. Not just how they hurt him but how they hurt others and especially oppressed, exploited and murdered skaa.
Despite the world he grew up and his station, Kelsier is an optimistic and charismatic person. In some ways its a direct reaction to the horrors of his life. The one thing they can't take from him is his hope and his will for change. He also has remarkable leadership abilities and would only want people to work for him who wanted to and honestly believed in their goals. Even before coming into his Allomancy, Kelsier had a way of swaying people and getting them to trust him. That trust was never misplaced. Kelsier firmly believes that the only way for great feats to be achieved is through trust and finding those you can trust. At the same time he had an interesting motto, There's always another secret. It seemed to only relate to his thieving ways and finding hidden chambers but later it gains a greater meaning.
Because Kelsier was such a capable leader and extremely competent in everything he did, he did grow a fair bit of arrogance as a result. That arrogance was often tied with his optimist, however. Optimistic to the point of arrogance.
It was a big blow to his ideal of trust was when he and has wife, Mare, were caught trying to steal from the Lord Ruler. The Lord Ruler himself insinuated that Mare had somehow betrayed Kelsier. That doubt nearly tore Kelsier apart. In spite of her apparent betrayal he still loved her which made it sting all the more. In the end, she gave her life so Kelsier could live and this caused him to Snap shortly after. Snapping is when one comes into their Allomantic abilities, a traumatic event needs to occur in order for it happen. His Snap enabled him to escape the Pits of Hathsin, where they both had been imprisoned in forced labor camp. He was the only one to leave the pits alive, that gained him the name The Survivor of Hathsin.
He was a changed man after that. His core traits remained true, he still smiled and chose to trust but there was now an undercurrent of something else. He decided he would change the world. He concocted a plan to bring down the Lord Ruler and fully admitted to a part of it being for revenge but that wasn't the only reason he wanted to do it. He wanted to undermine the nobility and put an end to the inequality.
At first, he was content to simply kill any nobles and guards that got in his way but after he took on a young Mistborn, Vin, as an apprentice he started to see things differently. Vin became like a daughter to him. They had a positive effect on one another. He showed Vin how to trust and have a family while she showed him that not all Nobility were beyond saving. In the end Kelsier saved the lives of both skaa and Nobles.
Kelsier's final act was an aspect of his plan he kept to himself. He died fighting the Lord Ruler. This act gave the skaa a reason to fight after a thousand years of oppression.
His death triggered a train of events that changed the world and did, in the end, make it a better place. Even as he didn't see it himself.
Barge Reactions:
- For meeting strange new people, he'll be interested. He won't bat an eye at those with powers though he will be interested to learn where their powers come from, especially if they don't have to burn metals to use them. Most reactions from him will be positive when it comes to people, he likes diversity. His own world was very oppressed so it will be refreshing to him to see people who are just different.
Oh, and he will be absolutely wowed by the gardens. Plants from his world were brown or white but he did know that plants were supposed to be green and where supposed to have flowers. He might take an hour and run around like an idiot in the Gardens, just saying.
When it comes to floods, he will be suspicious if it's not explained to him what is happening(I assume it will be explained). He has seen his share of strange happenings but he will be distressed if he sees its having negative affect on those around him.

Sample Journal Entry:
- I never thought I'd get to see green plants or flowers. The flowers are supposed to smell, yes? I heard stories about them having different colors and scents but I never thought they'd be so... vivid.
There are so many varieties here. In my own time, almost all plants were brown. There were some red, yellow and white variations but they never grew outside noble conservatories. They required too much care to keep the ash from choking them.
It was only really the brown plants that survived in the ash falls. I wonder why that is. Where the green ones simply too fragile? So much so they couldn't be grown in greenhouses?
Such green plants are strange but they also seem right. This is what plants are supposed to look like.
Sample RP: [3-5 paragraphs, 3rd Person POV. Must be Barge setting specific.]
- Kelsier had been on ships before but nothing this large and certainly not one that traveled though the universe as this one does. The thing he finds most strange, however, is the complete and utter lack of ash. He was used to ships with their decks stained black by years upon years of ash falls. It makes sense that there wouldn't be any here, of course.
He runs a hand along a rail, silently amazed to have it come up without a spec of ash. Well, there was a little dust. It's such a small thing to notice, such a small thing to enjoy. He closes his eyes and draws in a deep breath then smiles. Just breathing gives him a simple joy. He knows it's a manufactured atmosphere but it is so clean. Made to be like those of other worlds. The way most woulds should be.
He burns tin. His senses come into sharp relief. He still smiles but there is one thing he misses. The mists. If he closes his eyes he can almost imagine them swirling around him. He will miss the security they bring.
He stands, contemplative for a long time. Then his smile widens, his eyes open and he burns iron. He Pulls against the metal in the wall. Soon he's running with his feet against the wall. The Barge may not have buildings he can leap from but this will do. Especially if he earns a few bewildered looks from people seeing a man running along the wall.
