Powers
- Kelsier is what's called a Mistborn, an Allomancer who can use all the known metals. Most Allomancers can only burn one metal. Allomancers are section of the population that are granted certain powers by ingesting and "burning" certain metals. There are many metals but Kelsier is only aware of eleven. Each metal grants a certain type of power. Below are listed the metals Kelsier has used and is aware of.
External metals effect the world around the user. Internal metals effect the user directly.
Physical Metals
● STEEL (external) Allows the user to "Push" metals away from them. The laws of physics still apply however, one can only push metals that weigh less then themselves otherwise they will be pushed away from the metal. An additional ablity that comes with both Steel and Iron is the ability to sense nearby metals. This manifests as faint blue lines in their vision that point toward sources of metal. It has a limited range.
An additional limitation is most Mistborns(Kelsier included) can't "Push" metal within the body or piercing the body, earrings for example.
● IRON (external) Allows the user to "Pull" metals toward them. However, like steel Pushing the laws of physics still apply. If one pulls on a metal that weighs more than they do they will be pulled toward it. If they pull on metal that weighs less, such as a coin, it will be pulled toward them.
Like with Steel, most Mistborns(Kelsier included) can't "Pull" on metals inside the body or piercing the body.
“You did well,” Kelsier said.
“I nearly died.”
“Everybody does, their first time,” Kelsier said. “Ironpulling and Steelpushing are dangerous skills. You can impale yourself with a bit of metal that you Pull into your own body, you can jump and leave your anchor too far behind, or you can make a dozen other mistakes.”
○ TIN (internal) Enhances senses, all of them. While burning tin one can become easily blinded by sources of light or sound. Pain and other discomforts also become harder to ignore.
○ PEWTER (internal) Enhances the body in terms of strength, speed, agility and healing. However, Pewter burns away quickly it's affects only lasting a short time without a steady source of pewter to ingest.
Mental Metals
○ BRONZE (internal) Allows the user to sense other people in the area using Allomancy. The user will feel a sort of pulsing sensation that grows stronger as they get closer to the source.
○ COPPER (internal) Shields against those using Bronze. This effectively hides their use of Allomancy from those burning Bronze. Mistborns in Kelsier's time often keep their Copper on all the time to avoid detection.
● ZINC (external) Allows the user to affect the existing emotions of those around them. They can choose to "Riot" certain emotions, inflame them and bring them to the surface. This only works if those emotions are present, if an Allomacer misjudges their target their target will be aware of their attempts to manipulate them. Likewise, using a heavy hand while Rioting can also cause them to be detected.
● BRASS (external) Allows the user to affect the existing emotions of those around them. Unlike Zinc, Brass can "sooth" emotions to make the target feel them less. The same rules apply in regards to detection. The target can become aware if the soothing is very abrupt.
With Emotional Allomancy(using Brass and/or Zinc) Kelsier is at a passable skill level. There are others far more skilled at the art than he and can avoid detection easily. Kelsier can avoid detection most of the time but often times his powers are obvious to those who know what to look for.
Other metals
● ATIUM (external) enables the user to tell the future by just a few seconds. This manifests in the user's vision as translucent white shadowy outlines of the world around them, showing them where things will be in just a few seconds. This metal is used primarily in fights and battles. A user can block another's use of Atium by burning their own, making their outline explode into a chaotic mess in each others vision. Electrum, a metal that was discovered after Kelsier's death, can also block Atium's use against oneself. I mention it to be thorough even as Kelsier is unaware of it.
○ GOLD (internal) is a very creepy metal. It allows the user to see what they could have become if they made different choices in life. It manifests in the user's vision as other versions of themselves standing there.
● MALATIUM (external) This metal is know to Kelsier as The Eleventh Metal. It enables the user to see the possible other lives another person could have lived. It manifests in the user's vision as a shadow following their target.
There are more metals but as I said, Kelsier is only aware of those I've listed. Unknown metals or metals that are of incorrect composition can make the person who attempts to burn them very sick. If they were weakened enough, burning the wrong metal has the potential to kill them.
Unknown Metals (not known by Kelsier)
○ ALUMINUM (internal) it will completely burn away all the metals in an Allomancer's stomach when burned, rendering them powerless. This was known of in the time of Kelsier but he did not specifically known of it. Should his powers ever need to be limited or neutralized, it would be the easiest way to do it.
Limitations
◊ BURNING: At the end of the day, a Mistborn must burn all the metals in their stomach or risk poisoning themselves. This means one vial of metal, once ingested, won't last more than a day without serious risk to the user. Likewise a Mistborn is limited to the amount of metal they can ingest. Metals such as pewter burn too quickly for a Mistborn to have a large reserve ingested. Limiting its use to only a couple hours without replenishing.
All of the metals, in the usual amounts found in an Allomantic vials are usually limited to only 2-10 hours(depending on the metal) of burn time unless the user 'flares' which halves the duration of the power but doubles the strength.
◊ BAD METAL: If a metal isn't properly made or impure and a Mistborn burns it, they will get very ill. They may still be able to gain some power from the metal but it's no where near as powerful as pure metals.
“The thing is, most of the terms that people use— words like ‘brass,’ ‘pewter,’ and ‘bronze’— are really quite vague, when you get down to it. Pewter, for instance, is generally accepted as an alloy of tin mixed with lead, with perhaps some copper or silver, depending on the use and the circumstances. Allomancer’s pewter, however, is an alloy of ninety-one percent tin, nine percent lead. If you want maximum strength from your metal, you have to use those percentages.”
“And… if you burn the wrong percentage?” Vin asked.
“If the mixture is only off by a bit, you’ll still get some power out of it,” Kelsier said. “However, if it’s too far off, burning it will make you sick.”
◊ TRACE AMOUNTS: A Mistborn can burn trace amounts of metals they may have ingested through water or contaminated food but it only gives the tiniest of boosts and not relied on.
◊ SUPPLY: All Allomantic powers are limited to the user's supply of metal. Allomantic metals can only deviate by 1% in their purity without risk to the user. Needless to say, pure metals can be hard to come by.
◊ NO METAL: Kelsier is a normal human if has no metal burning or ingested. Mistborn will often use their metals sparingly and often hide their powers.
